Members of the celebrated Ghanaian brass ensemble, GG Brass Band, have expressed strong optimism about the future of brass music in Ghana, insisting that the genre still holds enormous potential despite changing musical trends.
According to the group, the biggest challenge facing brass music today is not competition from other genres, but the need for brass musicians themselves to continuously improve, innovate, and remain relevant in a fast-evolving entertainment industry.
Speaking during a recent interview, representatives of the band said they do not see other musical groups as rivals, stressing that their focus is on outperforming their own previous achievements.
“We are our own competition,” a member of the group stated. “Every performance, every production, and every project is an opportunity for us to become better than we were before.”
The group explained that brass music continues to command admiration because of its rich sound, live instrumentation, and energetic performances that connect deeply with audiences during ceremonies, concerts, festivals, and national events.
GG Brass Band noted that while genres such as Afrobeats, highlife, hip-hop, and gospel dominate mainstream conversations, brass music still plays an important role in Ghana’s entertainment and cultural identity.
The band also highlighted the growing interest among young musicians who are eager to learn instruments such as the trumpet, trombone, saxophone, and drums. According to them, this renewed interest is a sign that brass music is far from fading away.
They further called for greater investment in music education, especially in schools and communities, to help nurture the next generation of instrumentalists.
The musicians encouraged event organizers and stakeholders in the creative arts industry to create more platforms for live band performances, saying such opportunities would help preserve Ghana’s rich musical heritage while also giving young talents room to grow.
GG Brass Band believes the future of brass music lies in creativity, discipline, and consistency, adding that bands must embrace modern performance styles and digital promotion while staying true to the authentic sound that makes brass music unique.
The group reaffirmed its commitment to elevating brass music both locally and internationally, promising fans more exciting performances and collaborations in the near future.
