The Ghana Police Service has arrested two suspects in connection with a violent robbery attack on a Berekum Chelsea team bus that left one person dead in the Nyinahin District of the Ashanti Region.
The suspects are alleged to have been involved in the attack that occurred on Sunday, April 12, along the Ahyiresu–Kwame Dwumoh Sreso road, when armed men reportedly ambushed the bus carrying players and officials of the Ghana Premier League club after a match.
According to police reports, the attackers—believed to have been about six armed men—blocked the road and opened fire on the vehicle as it attempted to escape. In the chaos, the driver reportedly veered off the road into nearby bushes while players and officials fled for safety.
One of the players, identified as Dominic Frimpong, sustained gunshot wounds during the incident and was rushed to the Bibiani Government Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Following swift investigations, a joint police intelligence operation led to the arrest of the two suspects on April 15 at Atimatim in Kumasi. One of them is believed to be the gang leader, while the second suspect is also assisting police with investigations.
Police say one suspect sustained gunshot injuries during an exchange of fire with officers and is currently receiving treatment under guard at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital.
Several items, including a firearm and ammunition, were reportedly retrieved from the suspects during the operation. Authorities have also identified additional suspects who are currently on the run and are being pursued.
The Ghana Police Service has assured the public that efforts are ongoing to apprehend all individuals involved and bring them to justice.
Investigations into the deadly attack are still underway.
