The Minority in Parliament has intensified pressure on the government, calling for the removal of the Energy Minister over the country’s persistent power challenges, declaring that “the buck stops at the top.”

Addressing the media, members of the Minority caucus argued that the ongoing instability in electricity supply—often referred to as “dumsor”—reflects a clear failure of leadership at the highest level of the energy sector. According to them, despite repeated assurances from the government, Ghanaians continue to endure erratic power outages that are disrupting businesses, affecting households, and undermining economic productivity.

The caucus stressed that accountability must not be shifted to lower-ranking officials or technical staff, insisting that ultimate responsibility lies with the sector minister. “When systems fail consistently, leadership must take responsibility. The buck stops at the top,” a spokesperson for the group stated.

They further accused the Energy Ministry of failing to implement sustainable solutions to address generation shortfalls, maintenance issues, and fuel supply constraints that have contributed to the unreliable power supply. The Minority also questioned the lack of a clear load-shedding timetable, which they say has left citizens and businesses unable to plan effectively.

According to the group, the continued challenges point to deeper structural and management problems within the sector, which require decisive and competent leadership to resolve. They warned that failure to act swiftly could further erode public confidence in the government’s ability to manage critical national infrastructure.

The Minority is therefore urging the President to take immediate action by relieving the Energy Minister of his duties and appointing a more capable hand to restore stability and confidence in the power sector.

Meanwhile, they called on relevant stakeholders, including power generation and distribution agencies, to be transparent with the public and work collaboratively to address the situation. They also urged the government to prioritise long-term investments in energy infrastructure to prevent a recurrence of the crisis.

As the debate intensifies, many Ghanaians continue to grapple with the impact of the outages, with calls growing louder for practical solutions and accountability in the management of the country’s energy sector.
