Tension escalated at an MTN Ghana office in the Greater Accra Region after hundreds of Mobile Money (MoMo) agents staged a protest over the blocking of their agent SIM cards, which they say has disrupted their businesses and locked them out of funds running into millions of cedis.

The aggrieved agents gathered at the MTN office at Darkuman, near Komkompe, demanding immediate answers and the restoration of their blocked SIMs. According to them, the sudden deactivation came without clear explanation or prior warning, leaving many unable to conduct transactions for customers or access their MoMo wallets.

Some of the affected agents claimed they received messages from MTN indicating alleged breaches of contract, but said no specific details were provided to justify the action. Others said they only realized the scale of the problem when they arrived at MTN offices and found many colleagues facing similar restrictions.

The agents further alleged that they were told their SIM cards could only be reactivated after clearance from law enforcement authorities or by a court order, a development they described as frustrating and unclear. They are therefore calling on MTN to properly communicate the reasons behind the blockages and urgently restore access to their accounts.

The protest highlights growing tension within Ghana’s mobile money ecosystem, where agents serve as the backbone of cash-in and cash-out services across the country. Many of the affected operators say their livelihoods have been severely affected, as the blocked accounts reportedly contain significant amounts of working capital.

As the situation unfolds, the agents are demanding transparency, quicker resolution processes, and stronger safeguards to prevent abrupt disruptions in the future. They insist that until their concerns are addressed, confidence in the system will continue to be undermined.

For now, attention remains on MTN Ghana’s response, as pressure mounts for a swift resolution to ease tensions and restore normal operations for affected MoMo agents.
