The Tema Oil Refinery (TOR) has received one million barrels of crude oil as part of renewed efforts to restore full operations and strengthen Ghana’s downstream petroleum sector.
The delivery marks a significant step in the refinery’s operational recovery agenda following years of financial and technical challenges that affected production activities at the state-owned facility.
Management of TOR described the arrival of the crude consignment as a major breakthrough that will support refining operations, improve fuel security and help reduce the country’s dependence on imported refined petroleum products.
According to officials, the crude stock will be processed to produce various petroleum products for the local market, including diesel, gasoline and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG).
The refinery has in recent years struggled with debt burdens, ageing infrastructure and operational shutdowns, forcing Ghana to rely heavily on fuel imports. However, government and management have intensified efforts to revive the facility as part of broader plans to reposition TOR as a key player in the country’s energy sector.
Industry analysts believe the successful processing of the crude oil could help stabilize fuel supply, create jobs and enhance confidence in the refinery’s long-term viability.
Authorities say additional measures are being implemented to improve operational efficiency, secure sustainable crude supply arrangements and attract strategic partnerships to modernize the refinery.
The latest development is expected to inject fresh momentum into TOR’s recovery programme while reinforcing government’s commitment to reviving critical national assets within the energy sector.
