A former National Science and Maths Quiz (NSMQ) star from the Presbyterian Boys’ Secondary School, Legon, has earned recognition for an innovative health-focused project aimed at improving early detection of breast cancer.

PRESEC-Legon alumnus and 2020 NSMQ standout Benjamin Nketsiah has been honoured with an award for developing a project centred on breast cancer detection, highlighting the growing impact of young Ghanaian scientists in addressing public health challenges.

Nketsiah’s project focuses on improving early screening and identification of breast cancer, a disease that remains one of the leading health concerns affecting women globally and in Ghana. His innovation is aimed at making detection more accessible, affordable, and efficient, particularly in resource-limited settings.

The award recognises not only his academic excellence but also his commitment to using science and technology to solve real-world health problems. It also underscores the increasing role of young innovators in advancing medical research and preventive healthcare solutions.

Organisers of the award programme praised his work as a promising contribution to the fight against late diagnosis of breast cancer, which often reduces treatment success rates.

Nketsiah’s achievement adds to his growing reputation as one of Ghana’s bright young science talents, emerging from the competitive NSMQ platform to make meaningful contributions beyond the classroom.
