Member of Parliament for Mpraeso, Davis Ansah Opoku, has extended financial support to market women in the constituency following growing concerns surrounding their relocation from the old market space.
The gesture, which involved a donation of GH₵50,000, comes at a time when several traders have expressed anxiety over the impact the relocation exercise could have on their businesses and daily livelihoods. Many of the women reportedly feared losing customers, income, and stable trading spaces during the transition process.
Addressing the market women during the presentation, the MP acknowledged the difficulties that often accompany market restructuring and relocation exercises. He noted that while such developments are intended to improve trading conditions and modernize infrastructure, they can temporarily create hardships for traders who depend on daily sales to support their families.
According to him, the donation was meant to ease some of the immediate financial burdens facing the women as authorities work toward completing arrangements for a smoother transition. He encouraged the traders to remain calm and cooperative, assuring them that efforts were being made to ensure that their concerns are addressed fairly.
Some of the beneficiaries expressed appreciation for the intervention, describing it as timely support during a challenging period. Several market women reportedly said the donation would help them sustain their businesses and care for their households while awaiting clarity on the relocation arrangements.
The relocation issue has sparked discussions within the Mpraeso municipality in recent weeks, with traders calling for improved communication, proper allocation of trading spaces, and assurances that their businesses would not be negatively affected in the long term.
Community members and local leaders have since praised the MP’s intervention, saying it demonstrates responsiveness to the concerns of ordinary traders whose economic activities play a major role in the local economy.
