A heated political debate has emerged following allegations surrounding loans reportedly linked to the Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Ashanti Region, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Bernard Antwi Boasiako. The controversy has sparked reactions from political figures and party supporters, with some questioning the legitimacy of the accusations while others demand accountability.
Adding his voice to the matter, former Deputy General Secretary of the NPP, Haruna Mohammed, has strongly defended Chairman Wontumi against claims involving alleged loan irregularities connected to the Export-Import Bank of Ghana (Exim Bank).
According to Haruna Mohammed, attempts to portray Wontumi as having engaged in wrongdoing are politically motivated and aimed at damaging his public image. He argued that business people and companies often secure financial facilities from banks to support operations and expansion, stressing that taking a loan does not automatically amount to criminal conduct.
He maintained that if any facility was granted through proper procedures, then the focus should rather be on whether repayment terms were violated instead of creating what he described as unnecessary public drama around the issue. Haruna Mohammed insisted that many political actors are deliberately using the matter to score political points against the outspoken Ashanti Regional Chairman.
The discussion reportedly centers on financial transactions and loan arrangements involving Exim Bank, with critics raising concerns about whether due process was followed and whether state resources may have been exposed to risk. However, defenders of Chairman Wontumi argue that no court has found him guilty of any offense and that the allegations remain largely political commentary at this stage.
Haruna Mohammed further called on the public to avoid rushing to conclusions before official investigations or legal processes establish any wrongdoing. He emphasized that political rivalry should not replace facts, warning that repeated accusations without evidence could undermine public trust in national institutions.
Meanwhile, the issue continues to generate conversations within political circles, especially among supporters of both the ruling and opposition parties. For now, Chairman Wontumi’s allies remain firm in their defense, insisting that the Ashanti Regional Chairman is being unfairly targeted due to his influence and outspoken role in Ghanaian politics.
