Former National Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Freddie Blay, has openly declared his support for Ashanti Regional Chairman Bernard Antwi Boasiako in his bid to become the next national chairman of the party.
The endorsement was made during a private meeting held at Mr Blay’s residence, where Chairman Wontumi and members of his campaign team paid a courtesy call as part of ongoing consultations ahead of the anticipated NPP national executives race.
According to reports, Freddie Blay praised the structure and organisation of Wontumi’s campaign team, describing the group as focused, committed, and strategically prepared for the contest ahead. He reportedly expressed confidence in Wontumi’s ability to lead the party at the national level and assured him of his full backing throughout the campaign.
Speaking during the meeting, Mr Blay is quoted as saying, “This is Chairman Wontumi’s time. This is his moment. He is the man of the moment,” a statement many political observers see as a strong signal of growing support for Wontumi within influential circles of the party.
The discussions reportedly focused on campaign strategies and ways to strengthen support across key regions, particularly Greater Accra and the Eastern Region, which are expected to play crucial roles in the internal contest. Sources close to the campaign suggest the meeting also explored broader plans for rebuilding party unity and positioning the NPP strongly ahead of future national elections.
Freddie Blay also used the opportunity to encourage Chairman Wontumi amid his ongoing legal and political challenges, offering prayers and words of support as the Ashanti Regional Chairman continues to navigate issues that have recently attracted public attention.
The endorsement is being viewed as a significant political boost for Chairman Wontumi, whose ambition to lead the NPP nationally has increasingly generated debate within party ranks. Many supporters believe the backing of a former national chairman could strengthen his influence and consolidate support among delegates ahead of the contest.
Chairman Wontumi has in recent months intensified consultations across the country as he seeks to rally grassroots members and party executives behind his vision for the NPP’s future leadership.
