Accra has begun a large-scale cleanup operation following recent flooding incidents, with waste management company Zoomlion Ghana Limited and the Federation of Environmental Management Services (FeDEMS) joining forces with the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) to restore affected communities.
The exercise, which commenced in several flood-prone areas across the capital, aims to clear debris, desilt choked drains, remove waste deposits, and improve sanitation conditions in neighborhoods impacted by the heavy rains.
Officials from NADMO said the collaboration forms part of ongoing efforts to reduce the risk of disease outbreaks and ensure the swift recovery of communities affected by the floods. The agency noted that stagnant water, accumulated waste, and blocked drainage systems often worsen the impact of flooding and create health hazards for residents.
Teams from Zoomlion and FeDEMS deployed personnel, trucks, excavators, and other sanitation equipment to support the cleanup operation. The exercise focused on clearing refuse from drains, streets, and public spaces that were inundated during the floods.
Speaking during the exercise, representatives of the participating organizations emphasized the importance of collective action in addressing environmental challenges and minimizing the effects of flooding in urban areas. They urged residents to refrain from dumping refuse into drains and waterways, stressing that indiscriminate waste disposal remains a major contributor to flooding in the city.
Community members welcomed the intervention, describing it as a timely response to the challenges left behind by the floods. Many residents expressed hope that sustained sanitation efforts and improved drainage infrastructure would help prevent similar incidents in the future.
The cleanup initiative comes as authorities intensify efforts to strengthen disaster preparedness and environmental management across the Greater Accra Region, particularly during the rainy season when flooding risks are heightened.
NADMO has also encouraged the public to cooperate with sanitation officials and report blocked drains and other environmental hazards to help maintain cleaner and safer communities.
The joint operation is expected to continue in the coming days as teams work to restore normalcy in affected areas and enhance the city’s resilience against future flooding.
