Ghana’s Minister for Education has thrown his full support behind a proposed nationwide quiz competition on the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) for Senior High School (SHS) students, describing it as a timely initiative to deepen health awareness among the youth.
According to the Minister, the introduction of an NHIS-themed quiz at the SHS level will not only promote academic engagement but also equip students with essential knowledge about healthcare access, insurance benefits, and personal health responsibility. He noted that many young people often lack adequate understanding of how the NHIS operates, despite its importance in ensuring affordable healthcare for all Ghanaians.

The Minister emphasized that integrating health-related topics into co-curricular activities such as quizzes can significantly enhance students’ appreciation of national policies while encouraging critical thinking. He added that the initiative aligns with the government’s broader vision of building a well-informed and health-conscious population.
He further explained that the competition would serve as a platform to educate students on key aspects of the NHIS, including registration processes, benefits packages, and the importance of maintaining active membership. This, he believes, will help students become ambassadors of health awareness within their families and communities.
The proposed quiz is expected to be organized in collaboration with relevant stakeholders in the health and education sectors, including the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA). It will likely follow a structured format, beginning from the school level and progressing through regional contests to a national grand finale.
Education stakeholders have welcomed the Minister’s endorsement, noting that the initiative could bridge the knowledge gap between policy and practice while inspiring students to take an active interest in public health issues.
If successfully implemented, the nationwide NHIS quiz is anticipated to not only promote healthy living among students but also strengthen the overall impact of the NHIS by fostering a generation that is well-informed about their healthcare rights and responsibilities.
