Dr. Mary Awusi has issued an apology to Apostle Eric Nyamekye following controversy over comments she made that were interpreted as political in nature, sparking public debate and concern within religious and social circles.
The remarks, which circulated widely on social media and other platforms, were said to have linked or implied political undertones involving the respected religious leader, prompting backlash from sections of the public who felt the comments were inappropriate and misleading.
In a clarification statement, Dr. Awusi explained that her comments were not intended to drag Apostle Nyamekye into political discourse or to question his integrity. She stressed that her words had been misunderstood and taken out of context, leading to unnecessary tension.
“I deeply regret any misunderstanding caused by my statement,” she indicated, adding that she holds Apostle Nyamekye in high regard and has the utmost respect for his leadership and contributions.
She further emphasised that her reference to “political” issues was general and not directed at the church leader or any religious institution, noting that she recognises the important role religious bodies play in promoting peace and unity in the country.
Apostle Eric Nyamekye, who is widely respected for his leadership within the Christian community, has not yet publicly responded to the apology.
The development has since generated mixed reactions, with some calling for greater caution in public commentary involving religious figures, while others have urged calm and reconciliation.
