Ghana’s U-17 national team, the Black Starlets, surrendered a comfortable two-goal advantage to settle for a dramatic 2-2 draw against Algeria in a thrilling clash at the CAF U-17 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
The Starlets started brightly and looked in complete control during the opening stages of the encounter, showing confidence, sharp attacking movement, and determination against the North Africans.
Ghana’s early pressure paid off when the Black Starlets broke the deadlock with a well-worked goal that sent the bench and supporters into celebration. The team continued to dominate possession and create dangerous chances, forcing Algeria onto the back foot.
Their impressive display was rewarded again before halftime as Ghana doubled their advantage, putting themselves in a strong position to secure all three points. With a 2-0 lead, the Black Starlets appeared set for a comfortable victory as Algeria struggled to contain Ghana’s attacking threat.
However, the second half told a completely different story.
Algeria returned from the break with renewed energy and intensity, pushing forward aggressively in search of a comeback. Ghana’s defence gradually came under pressure as the Algerians increased the tempo and exploited spaces at the back.
The North Africans eventually pulled one back midway through the second half, shifting momentum firmly in their favour and giving them belief that a comeback was possible.
As the game entered its closing stages, Ghana found it difficult to regain control, with Algeria continuing to pile pressure on the Starlets’ defence. Their persistence paid off late in the match when they grabbed the equaliser to complete a stunning comeback and silence the Ghanaian supporters.
Despite the disappointment of letting a two-goal lead slip away, the Black Starlets showed flashes of quality and attacking promise throughout the contest. However, questions will likely be raised about the team’s inability to maintain composure and defensive discipline after taking control of the match.
The 2-2 draw leaves Ghana with mixed feelings, having come so close to securing an important victory before Algeria fought back to earn a share of the spoils.
