The body of a 30-year-old electrician who was swept away by floodwaters following a heavy downpour has been recovered in the Ga South Municipality of the Greater Accra Region.
The deceased, identified as a resident of the area, reportedly drowned after being caught in fast-moving floodwaters during a recent rainstorm that triggered flooding in several communities across Accra and its surrounding districts.
According to eyewitnesses, the victim was attempting to navigate a flooded section of the community when he was overwhelmed by the strong currents and disappeared beneath the water. Residents immediately launched a search and alerted emergency responders.
Personnel from the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), together with local volunteers and security agencies, conducted an extensive search operation that lasted several hours before the victim’s body was eventually retrieved from a drainage channel.
The body has since been deposited at a nearby mortuary for preservation and further examination, while police have commenced investigations into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
The tragic development has renewed concerns over the dangers posed by flooding during the rainy season, particularly in communities with poor drainage systems and residents who attempt to cross flooded roads and waterways.
Authorities have once again urged the public to exercise caution during periods of heavy rainfall and to avoid walking or driving through floodwaters, warning that even seemingly shallow floods can become deadly.
The incident adds to the growing number of casualties linked to recent flooding episodes in parts of the Greater Accra Region, as officials continue to intensify public education on disaster preparedness and flood safety.
