Former President John Dramani Mahama has described the fire outbreak at the Akosombo Substation as “an act of God,” urging calm while authorities work to assess the full extent of the damage and restore stability to the power system.
The incident, which occurred at the critical power installation serving parts of southern Ghana, triggered widespread concern over potential disruptions to electricity supply. Preliminary reports indicate that the fire affected key components of the substation, though emergency response teams were able to contain the blaze before it spread further.
Commenting on the development, Mr. Mahama said the situation appears to be beyond human control, noting that such occurrences, while unfortunate, can happen despite precautionary measures. He emphasized the need for a thorough technical investigation to determine the exact cause, while cautioning against premature conclusions or politicization of the issue.
“This is clearly an act of God,” he stated, adding that the priority should be on restoring power and supporting affected communities and businesses. He also called on relevant agencies, including the Ghana Grid Company and the Electricity Company of Ghana, to expedite repair works and provide timely updates to the public.
Energy sector officials have since assured Ghanaians that contingency measures are in place to minimize disruptions. Engineers are currently evaluating the damage and working to reroute power where possible to maintain supply.
The Akosombo Substation plays a vital role in transmitting electricity from the Akosombo Dam to major load centers, making any incident at the facility a matter of national concern. Authorities say efforts are underway to fully restore operations while ensuring safety and system reliability.
Meanwhile, residents and businesses in affected areas have been advised to exercise patience as restoration works continue. Energy experts say the coming days will be critical in determining how quickly normal supply can be resumed.
