Ghana kicked off their 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign in dramatic fashion, securing a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Panama thanks to a stoppage-time winner from Caleb Yirenkyi in their Group L opener.
The encounter, played in Toronto, appeared destined to end in a goalless draw after both sides struggled to create clear-cut scoring opportunities for much of the match. Panama enjoyed periods of dominance, particularly in the first half, and tested Ghana’s defence on several occasions. However, the Black Stars remained resilient, with goalkeeper Lawrence Ati-Zigi producing important saves to keep the score level.
As the game entered stoppage time, Ghana launched a swift counterattack that finally broke the deadlock. Brandon Thomas-Asante provided the decisive pass, allowing Yirenkyi to fire home in the fifth minute of added time and send Ghanaian supporters into celebration. The goal marked Yirenkyi’s first competitive international strike for the Black Stars and secured all three points for Ghana.
The victory places Ghana in a strong position in Group L alongside England, who also won their opening match. While Panama will be left disappointed after coming close to earning a valuable point, Ghana can take confidence from their determination and ability to deliver when it mattered most.
The Black Stars will now turn their attention to a crucial clash against England on June 23, while Panama prepares to face Croatia as the battle for qualification to the knockout stage intensifies.
