The competition for the Tamale Central parliamentary seat has further diminished, as Alhaji Ibrahim Seidu, an engineer, has opted to withdraw from the contest.
His choice comes after the prior withdrawal of Halid Abdul Rauf, a lawyer and the National Vice Chairman of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC).
Sources close to Alhaji Seidu indicate that he stepped back due to the unexpectedly large number of candidates who submitted nomination forms on the first day, indicating a fiercely competitive race.
With his departure, the total number of confirmed candidates now stands at 12, reduced from the original 14.
According to the Electoral Commission’s schedule, nominations will close today, Sunday, August 24, 2025, while the submission of forms is set for Thursday, August 28, between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m.
The Tamale Central by-election was prompted by the passing of the sitting MP and Minister for Environment, Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed, who tragically died in a helicopter crash on August 6. The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has already declared that it will not present a candidate in tribute to the late MP.
