The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has officially launched a new 33 kV sub-transmission feeder designed to accommodate increased capacity from an upgraded 50/66 MVA transformer provided by the Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo).
This significant achievement, marked by the energization of the new feeder on August 24, 2025, aims to benefit Obuasi and its surrounding areas. It comes in the wake of several months of supply difficulties caused by a fire incident that damaged GRIDCo’s transformer, which was responsible for supplying the Obuasi Bulk Supply Point (BSP).
As a result, the power supply was interrupted for numerous households and businesses in Obuasi, located in the Ashanti Region.
In response, ECG mobilized a specialized standby team of engineers who traveled weekly between Kumasi and Obuasi to maintain operations and promptly resolve technical issues.
Within a span of one and a half months, this team collaborated closely with GRIDCo and its contractors to restore power.
As part of the project, the Electricity Company Limited decommissioned its existing 11 kV cables and installed new 33 kV cables connecting GRIDCo’s gantry to its own GIS panels at the Obuasi Substation.

This transition signifies a notable enhancement in the network’s resilience and its ability to serve the enclave.
Ing. Peter Kofi Fletcher, the General Manager of Ashanti Sub-Transmission, praised the collaboration and determination that enabled the project’s success during the commissioning.
“What we have accomplished in Obuasi exemplifies the strength of teamwork and dedication. Our engineers, GRIDCo, contractors, and even AngloGold Ashanti—who provided power to some communities through their dedicated transformer during the crisis—contributed significantly.
“Today, we can assure the residents of Obuasi and its neighboring areas of a consistent and dependable electricity supply. This initiative transcends mere power lines and transformers; it is fundamentally about illuminating homes, supporting businesses, and sustaining industries.”
Ing. Fletcher also expressed gratitude to the diligent teams from Ashanti Sub-Transmission, Ashanti South, the contractor, GRIDCo, and AngloGold Ashanti for their collaboration and assistance.
The successful commissioning indicates that customers in Obuasi and surrounding communities can now anticipate a stable, efficient, and reliable electricity supply.
