Twenty-two fishermen have been rescued following a violent attack by unidentified armed men at sea near Senya Beraku in the Central Region.
The incident, which occurred in the early hours of the week, left members of the fishing crew traumatized after their canoe was reportedly intercepted by a group of assailants believed to have arrived in a separate vessel. According to eyewitness accounts, the attackers wielded machetes and other weapons, overpowering the fishermen and seizing their catch, fishing nets, outboard motor, and other valuables.
Sources within the fishing community say the victims were beaten and threatened before being abandoned at sea. Fortunately, another fishing crew operating nearby spotted the distressed fishermen and raised an alarm, leading to a swift rescue effort.
Local authorities and marine security personnel were subsequently notified, and the victims were brought safely back to shore. Some of the fishermen sustained minor injuries and were treated at a nearby health facility, while others received first aid upon arrival.
Community leaders in Senya Beraku have expressed deep concern over the rising incidents of piracy and armed robbery along the coast. They are calling on the government and security agencies to intensify patrols and provide adequate protection for fishermen, whose livelihoods continue to be threatened by criminal activities at sea.
The Ghana Police Service has reportedly launched investigations into the attack and assured residents that efforts are underway to apprehend the perpetrators. Meanwhile, fishing activities in the area have been temporarily disrupted as fear grips the coastal community.
Residents and fisherfolk are urging swift action to prevent a recurrence and restore confidence among those who depend on the sea for survival.
