The Embassy of Russia in Ghana has firmly denied any connection to a man described on social media as a “Russian national” in a viral sex scandal circulating in Ghana, distancing the Russian state from the individual at the centre of the controversy.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, the Embassy clarified that the person featured in the widely shared videos and images is not affiliated with the Russian diplomatic mission and does not represent the government of the Russia in any capacity.
Embassy Breaks Silence
The diplomatic mission said it had taken note of the growing online speculation and misinformation suggesting the involvement of a Russian citizen with official ties. It stressed that preliminary checks conducted by the Embassy found no record linking the individual to its staff or to any official Russian delegation in Ghana.
“The Embassy categorically states that the individual in question has no connection with the Russian diplomatic mission or any official Russian institution,” the statement noted.
The Embassy further urged the public and media outlets to avoid spreading unverified claims that could damage bilateral relations between Russia and Ghana.
Viral Scandal Sparks Public Outrage
The controversy erupted after explicit content allegedly involving the man and a Ghanaian woman began circulating across social media platforms, triggering public debate and condemnation.
While some online users claimed the man was a Russian official, others questioned the authenticity of the claims, prompting calls for clarification from the relevant authorities.
Call for Responsible Reporting
The Russian Embassy appealed to journalists and bloggers to exercise caution and professionalism in reporting on the matter. It warned that false attributions and sensational headlines risk fuelling diplomatic tensions and undermining longstanding cooperation between the two countries.
Russia and Ghana have maintained diplomatic relations for decades, collaborating in areas such as trade, education, and energy.
Authorities in Ghana have not yet announced any formal investigation into the matter as public interest in the case continues to grow.
