The Member of Parliament for Old Tafo has launched a major street lighting project aimed at improving security and enhancing economic activity after dark within the constituency.
The initiative, which involves the installation and rehabilitation of street lights across key roads and communities, is expected to address long-standing concerns about poor visibility and rising insecurity at night. Residents in several parts of Old Tafo have for years complained about inadequate lighting, which they say has made them vulnerable to crime and limited commercial activity after sunset.
Speaking at the launch of the project, the MP noted that access to reliable street lighting is essential for community safety and development. He explained that the intervention forms part of broader efforts to create a safer environment for residents while also encouraging businesses to operate beyond daytime hours.
According to him, improved lighting will not only deter criminal activities but also support traders, transport operators, and other small businesses that depend on evening and night-time operations. He added that a vibrant night-time economy could significantly boost local income levels and contribute to overall economic growth in the area.
The project is being implemented in phases, with priority given to high-traffic areas, markets, and communities identified as security hotspots. The MP assured constituents that more neighborhoods would be covered as work progresses.
Community members who attended the launch welcomed the initiative, describing it as timely and impactful. Some residents expressed optimism that better lighting would help reduce incidents of theft and improve general safety, particularly for women and children.
Local business owners also lauded the move, saying it would allow them to extend their working hours and increase revenue. Transport operators, including commercial drivers and motorbike riders, indicated that improved visibility would make night travel safer and more efficient.
The MP further called on residents to support the project by protecting the installed infrastructure from vandalism and reporting any faults promptly to ensure quick maintenance.
The street lighting project underscores ongoing efforts by local authorities and stakeholders to improve infrastructure and enhance the quality of life in Old Tafo, while positioning the constituency as a safer and more economically active community.
