The Minority in Parliament has urged government to properly acknowledge former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia for his role in the Gold-for-Reserves (G-4-R) policy, while also calling for increased transparency in the implementation of the programme.
According to the Minority, the G-4-R initiative was conceptualised and championed under Dr. Bawumia’s leadership as part of efforts to stabilise the cedi, reduce pressure on foreign exchange reserves, and strengthen Ghana’s macroeconomic position. They argue that any successes recorded under the policy must fairly recognise his contribution.
The caucus further expressed concerns about the current management and reporting framework of the programme, stressing the need for detailed disclosures on gold purchases, reserve levels, transaction costs, and overall impact on the economy. They maintained that transparency is essential to ensure public confidence and prevent political misrepresentation of the policy.
While reiterating their support for initiatives aimed at strengthening the economy, the Minority insisted that accountability and openness must remain central to the policy’s execution. They called on government to provide comprehensive updates to Parliament and the public, describing the G-4-R programme as a national initiative that should rise above partisan politics.
