Former President John Dramani Mahama has officially cut the sod for the construction of a major glass manufacturing factory in Shama, marking a significant step toward boosting Ghana’s industrialisation drive and creating employment opportunities in the Western Region.
The sod-cutting ceremony, held in Shama, brought together traditional leaders, local government officials, industry players, and residents who gathered to witness the commencement of the ambitious project. The factory, when completed, is expected to process locally available raw materials into various glass products for both domestic use and export.
Speaking at the event, Mr. Mahama underscored the importance of value addition to Ghana’s natural resources, noting that the country has for years exported raw materials without fully maximising their economic potential. He stressed that the establishment of the glass factory aligns with broader efforts to promote local manufacturing, reduce imports, and strengthen the country’s industrial base.
According to him, the project is expected to generate hundreds of direct and indirect jobs, particularly for the youth in Shama and surrounding communities. He added that beyond employment, the factory will stimulate ancillary businesses, including transportation, packaging, and retail, thereby contributing to local economic growth.
The initiative also forms part of a broader vision to decentralise industrial development and ensure that regions outside Accra benefit from large-scale investments. Mahama indicated that strategic investments in manufacturing are critical to building a resilient economy capable of withstanding global shocks.
Traditional authorities in Shama welcomed the project and expressed optimism that it would transform the socio-economic landscape of the area. They pledged their support to ensure smooth implementation and urged residents to take advantage of the opportunities that would arise from the factory’s operations.
Once operational, the glass factory is expected to supply products to the construction, beverage, and automotive industries, while positioning Ghana as a competitive player in the regional glass manufacturing market.
The sod-cutting ceremony signals the beginning of what stakeholders describe as a transformative industrial project that could significantly enhance Ghana’s value chain and industrial output in the years ahead.
