Authorities at Kotoka International Airport have announced plans to introduce advanced 3D security scanners in a move expected to significantly enhance passenger experience and tighten aviation safety standards.
The new technology will allow travelers to keep their shoes on during screening — ending one of the most inconvenient aspects of airport security checks.
Modern Security Upgrade
The installation of the 3D scanners, also known as Computed Tomography (CT) scanners, forms part of broader efforts to modernize security infrastructure at the country’s premier aviation hub in Accra.
Unlike traditional X-ray machines, the new scanners generate detailed three-dimensional images of baggage and personal items, enabling security personnel to detect threats more accurately without requiring passengers to remove shoes or unpack electronics in many cases.
Airport officials say the technology meets evolving international aviation safety standards and aligns Ghana’s main airport with best practices in global travel.
Faster, More Convenient Screening

The introduction of the 3D scanners is expected to reduce long queues at security checkpoints, particularly during peak travel periods. With less need for manual bag checks and physical inspections, passenger throughput is anticipated to improve significantly.
Travelers have long expressed frustration over having to remove footwear during screening — a policy introduced worldwide following past aviation security threats. The new system eliminates that requirement while maintaining high levels of threat detection.
Boost for Passenger Experience
Aviation analysts believe the upgrade will enhance Ghana’s competitiveness as a regional aviation hub. Kotoka International Airport serves as the country’s primary gateway, handling millions of passengers annually and connecting Ghana to major destinations across Africa, Europe, the Middle East, and North America.
Officials maintain that safety remains the top priority, but improving passenger comfort and efficiency is equally important as global travel rebounds and competition among airports intensifies.
With the rollout of 3D scanning technology, Kotoka International Airport signals a new era of smarter, faster, and more passenger-friendly security screening.
