A leading journalists’ association in Ghana has announced plans to launch a nationwide campaign aimed at combating illegal small-scale gold mining, commonly known as galamsey, which continues to pose serious environmental and social challenges across the country.

The campaign seeks to raise public awareness about the detrimental effects of galamsey on water bodies, forests, and farmlands, as well as its contribution to environmental degradation and community conflicts. Through media advocacy, educational programs, and community engagements, the journalists’ group intends to highlight the importance of sustainable mining practices and adherence to legal regulations.

Speaking on the initiative, the spokesperson for the association emphasized the role of the media in holding stakeholders accountable, educating the public, and supporting government efforts to curb illegal mining activities. “We believe that informed citizens can make better choices, and our campaign will empower communities to resist illegal mining and report activities that harm their environment,” the spokesperson stated.

The campaign is also expected to foster collaboration with government agencies, traditional authorities, and civil society groups to ensure coordinated efforts in addressing galamsey. The journalists’ group hopes that sustained advocacy will lead to significant reductions in illegal mining and promote responsible natural resource management in Ghana.
