Iran has confirmed that its top security official, Ali Larijani, has been killed in an air strike, marking one of the most significant blows to the country’s leadership during the ongoing conflict involving Israel and its allies.
According to Iranian authorities and multiple international reports, Larijani died after a targeted strike hit a location near the outskirts of Tehran. The attack reportedly also killed several people close to him, including members of his security detail and family members who were present at the time.
Iran’s Supreme National Security Council confirmed his death shortly after the strike, describing him as a central figure in the country’s political and security establishment. Officials in Tehran vowed retaliation and warned that the killing would escalate tensions in an already volatile regional conflict.
Israeli officials said the operation was part of a broader campaign targeting senior Iranian leadership involved in directing military operations and regional activities. Larijani was one of the highest-ranking Iranian figures to be killed since the conflict intensified earlier in 2026.
Larijani had long been a powerful figure in Iranian politics. Over the years, he served in several senior roles, including parliamentary speaker and a key strategist in national security matters. He was widely regarded as a bridge between Iran’s political leadership and its military establishment, and he also played roles in previous nuclear negotiations with world powers.
Reports indicate the strike took place during the night of 16–17 March, when Israeli forces targeted locations believed to be housing senior officials. Intelligence tracking and surveillance were reportedly used to locate Larijani before the attack was carried out.
The killing comes amid a widening war that has already resulted in heavy casualties and the deaths of several senior Iranian officials. Analysts say the elimination of Larijani could deepen instability inside Iran’s leadership structure and further raise the risk of a broader regional escalation.
