The Ministry of the Interior has confirmed reports of an attack on Ghanaian traders operating in neighbouring Burkina Faso, raising fresh concerns over the safety of citizens engaged in cross-border commerce.

In a statement issued on Sunday, the Ministry said it had received credible information regarding the incident, which reportedly targeted a group of Ghanaian traders conducting business in parts of Burkina Faso. While details remain sketchy, officials indicated that investigations are ongoing in collaboration with Burkinabe authorities.

According to the Ministry, preliminary reports suggest that the traders were attacked by unknown assailants, resulting in injuries and the destruction of goods. The exact number of victims and the extent of losses are yet to be officially confirmed.

The Government of Ghana, through diplomatic and security channels, has engaged authorities in Burkina Faso to ensure the safety of affected individuals and to facilitate necessary support, including medical care and possible evacuation where required.

“The Government is working closely with its Burkinabe counterparts to ascertain the full facts of the incident and to ensure the protection of Ghanaian nationals,” the statement noted.

The Ministry further urged Ghanaian traders and citizens residing in Burkina Faso to remain calm but vigilant, and to adhere strictly to local security advisories. It also encouraged those affected to report to the nearest Ghanaian diplomatic mission or local authorities for assistance.

Cross-border trade between Ghana and Burkina Faso plays a vital role in the economies of both countries, particularly in agricultural produce, livestock, and manufactured goods. However, recent years have seen growing security challenges in parts of the Sahel region, including armed attacks and insurgent activity, which have occasionally disrupted commercial activities.

The Interior Ministry assured the public that it will continue to monitor the situation closely and provide updates as more information becomes available.

Meanwhile, families of the affected traders in Ghana are said to be anxiously awaiting further details as government officials work to confirm the identities and conditions of those involved.

Authorities have reiterated their commitment to safeguarding Ghanaian citizens both at home and abroad, emphasizing that the welfare and security of nationals remain a top priority.
