Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has called for proper recognition to be given to former Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia for his role in the conception and implementation of Ghana’s Gold-for-Reserve policy.
According to Afenyo-Markin, the innovative policy, which sought to strengthen Ghana’s foreign exchange reserves and stabilise the cedi through the strategic use of gold, was largely driven by Dr. Bawumia during his tenure as Vice President. He argued that political differences should not overshadow the contributions individuals make toward national economic stability.
The Effutu MP maintained that the Gold-for-Reserve initiative was a bold intervention introduced at a critical time when the country was grappling with currency pressures and rising import costs. He noted that the policy helped reduce the demand for foreign exchange to pay for petroleum products and other imports, thereby easing pressure on the local currency.
Afenyo-Markin stressed that public discourse must remain fair and factual, urging critics to acknowledge the former Vice President’s leadership in championing the policy. “Give to Bawumia what belongs to him,” he stated, adding that national development should not be politicised to the extent that key contributors are denied credit.
He further called for continuity in economic strategies that serve Ghana’s interests, regardless of changes in government, emphasising that sound policies should be sustained for the benefit of the nation.
