The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) has issued a strong warning to media houses, manufacturers and importers, stressing that no product should be advertised without prior approval from the Authority.
According to the FDA, all advertisements relating to regulated products—including food, drugs, cosmetics, medical devices and herbal medicines—must first be vetted and approved before they are broadcast, published or promoted to the public. The Authority says the directive is part of efforts to protect consumers from misleading claims and potentially harmful products.
In a statement, the FDA reminded stakeholders that advertising unapproved or unregistered products violates the country’s public health regulations and could attract sanctions. The Authority noted that some manufacturers and marketers continue to promote products with exaggerated or unverified health claims, particularly across radio, television and social media platforms.
The FDA emphasised that such practices pose serious risks to public health, as consumers may rely on these advertisements when making decisions about medicines or health-related products. It therefore urged media organisations to ensure that any advertisement submitted for broadcast has the required FDA approval before airing it.
Manufacturers and distributors were also advised to comply with all regulatory procedures, including registering their products and securing advertising clearance from the Authority. The FDA explained that the approval process helps verify product safety, quality and the accuracy of claims made in promotional materials.
The Authority further warned that any media outlet or company found violating the directive could face regulatory action, including fines, suspension of advertisements or other legal measures.
The FDA is therefore encouraging the public to remain vigilant and report suspicious or unapproved product advertisements. It reiterated its commitment to safeguarding consumer health and ensuring that only safe and properly approved products are promoted across the country.
