Five individuals have been arrested in connection with a major tramadol seizure in what authorities describe as a significant breakthrough in the fight against illicit drug trafficking. The suspects are also alleged to have attempted to bribe officers with GH¢50,000 in a bid to avoid arrest and prosecution.
According to security sources, the arrests followed a targeted intelligence-led operation that uncovered a substantial quantity of tramadol believed to be intended for illegal distribution. The suspects were apprehended at the scene, and the consignment has since been confiscated as evidence.
Officials disclosed that during initial interrogations, the suspects allegedly offered GH¢50,000 to officers in an attempt to obstruct the process and secure their release. The officers reportedly rejected the offer and proceeded with the arrest, reinforcing what authorities say is a renewed commitment to tackling corruption within enforcement operations.
Investigators are currently working to determine the origin and intended destination of the seized tramadol, as well as whether the suspects are linked to a broader trafficking network operating within or beyond the country’s borders.
Law enforcement agencies have reiterated concerns over the growing abuse of tramadol, particularly among young people, warning that the drug’s misuse poses serious public health and security risks. Authorities say intensified surveillance and coordinated operations will continue in a bid to clamp down on illegal pharmaceutical trade.
The five suspects remain in custody and are expected to be arraigned before court in the coming days as investigations proceed.
