The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has intercepted and seized 14 containers carrying illegal mining machinery at the Tema Port, marking one of the largest crackdowns on unauthorized mining equipment in recent times.
Massive Haul Targets Galamsey Operators
The containers, reportedly destined for unlicensed small-scale miners, contained excavators, drilling machines, and other heavy-duty mining equipment. Authorities say the seizure is a significant blow to illegal mining, locally known as galamsey, which continues to threaten Ghana’s environment.
EPA officials stated that the illegal imports were aimed at operations bypassing legal and environmental safeguards, posing risks of land degradation, water pollution, and deforestation.
Investigation Underway
Authorities are now investigating the origin of the shipment and the individuals behind the illegal imports. The EPA has vowed to trace the supply chain to ensure that all culpable parties face legal action.
The operation underscores Ghana’s intensified efforts to curb illegal mining and reinforce compliance with environmental regulations, particularly at ports and border entry points.
Public Urged to Report Illegal Mining
The EPA has urged citizens and businesses to remain vigilant and report any illegal mining activities. Officials reiterated that environmental crimes carry severe penalties, including fines and imprisonment, to deter the proliferation of unlicensed mining operations.
This seizure at Tema Port marks a continued clampdown on illegal mining machinery entering the country, as authorities aim to protect Ghana’s natural resources and safeguard communities affected by environmental degradation.
