The Minister for Energy has unveiled a series of decisive measures aimed at permanently resolving the long-standing shortage of electricity meters across the country. The move comes amid growing public frustration over delays in meter installations, which have affected new connections, billing processes, and revenue collection within the power sector.
Addressing stakeholders at a press briefing, the Minister acknowledged the challenges that have plagued the distribution chain in recent months, including procurement bottlenecks, supply chain disruptions, and rising demand for new connections. He assured the public that government is taking urgent steps to restore efficiency and eliminate the backlog.
According to the Minister, the new strategy includes fast-tracking procurement processes, increasing collaboration with local meter manufacturers, and strengthening oversight to prevent procurement delays. He emphasized that government is prioritizing local production to reduce dependence on imports and ensure a steady supply of meters to distribution companies.
In addition, the Ministry is working closely with the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) and the Northern Electricity Distribution Company (NEDCo) to clear existing backlogs. A special task force has reportedly been established to monitor meter distribution and installation timelines to ensure accountability.
The Minister further indicated that reforms are being introduced to improve transparency in meter allocation and prevent illegal connections that often arise due to shortages. Digital tracking systems will also be deployed to monitor meter stock levels in real time and streamline distribution.
He reassured consumers that the measures will not only address the immediate shortages but also create a sustainable framework to prevent future occurrences. “Our goal is to ensure that every Ghanaian who applies for a meter receives it without unnecessary delays,” he stated.
The announcement has been welcomed by industry players and consumer advocacy groups, who say resolving the meter shortage will improve service delivery, boost revenue mobilization, and enhance overall efficiency in the energy sector.
