The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) has announced an ambitious nationwide intervention to clear a backlog of approximately 440,000 driver’s licences, rolling out 24-hour processing centres to accelerate service delivery.
The move forms part of broader reforms aimed at improving efficiency, reducing waiting times, and restoring public confidence in the Authority’s operations.
Round-the-Clock Operations to Fast-Track Issuance
According to officials, selected DVLA offices will operate on a 24-hour schedule to address the massive accumulation of pending licence applications.
The backlog, which has built up over time due to technical, administrative, and operational challenges, has left thousands of applicants waiting months for their licences.
Management says the new system will significantly shorten turnaround times, enabling applicants to receive their licences within days rather than weeks or months.
Digital Reforms and System Upgrades
The DVLA indicated that the intervention is supported by enhanced digital infrastructure and improved internal processes designed to eliminate bottlenecks.
Officials stressed that the Authority is strengthening its data management systems, increasing staffing levels at key centres, and intensifying monitoring mechanisms to prevent future backlogs.
The 24-hour processing initiative is also expected to improve transparency and reduce opportunities for middlemen and unofficial charges.
Public Urged to Use Official Channels
The Authority has urged applicants to use only official DVLA channels for their licence applications and avoid unapproved agents.
Management emphasised that the clearing of the 440,000 backlog is a priority and assured the public of its commitment to delivering timely, efficient, and reliable services.
The rollout of round-the-clock processing centres marks one of the most significant operational shifts in the DVLA’s recent history, as it seeks to modernise its services and enhance customer satisfaction nationwide.
