The African Institute for Mathematical Sciences (AIMS) Ghana, in collaboration with the Ghana Education Service (GES) and the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund), has announced a joint celebration of the International Day of Mathematics (IDM) 2026. The initiative aims to promote mathematical literacy, inspire students, and highlight the relevance of mathematics in everyday life and national development.
Set to take place at various schools and educational centers across Ghana, the celebration will include interactive workshops, math competitions, exhibitions, and lectures by distinguished mathematicians. Students, educators, and the public will have the opportunity to engage with practical applications of mathematics, ranging from technology and finance to science and engineering.
Speaking at the launch, a spokesperson for AIMS Ghana emphasized the importance of fostering a strong foundation in mathematics for Ghana’s youth. “Mathematics is not just a subject in the classroom; it is a key driver of innovation, critical thinking, and problem-solving. Through this partnership, we hope to spark curiosity and show the next generation the exciting possibilities that mathematics offers,” the spokesperson said.
The GES reaffirmed its commitment to promoting STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) education, while GETFund pledged financial and logistical support to ensure a nationwide reach for the event. Officials noted that such collaborations are vital for nurturing young talent and preparing students for higher education and careers in math-related fields.
This year’s International Day of Mathematics, themed “Mathematics for a Better Future”, promises to be an engaging and educational experience for participants, reinforcing Ghana’s growing reputation as a hub for mathematical excellence and innovation in Africa.
