The Ministry of Health (MoH) has announced plans to remove doctors who are persistently absent from duty from the government payroll, as part of efforts to strengthen accountability and improve healthcare delivery.
According to the Ministry, the decision follows growing concerns about health professionals who fail to report to their assigned posts yet continue to draw salaries. Officials say such practices undermine service delivery, especially in underserved and rural communities where medical personnel are already in short supply.
The MoH indicated that a nationwide audit is underway to identify doctors who have abandoned their posts or are absent without official approval. Those found culpable will be sanctioned in line with public service regulations, including being removed from the payroll.
The Ministry stressed that the move is not punitive but aimed at ensuring that public funds are used responsibly and that patients receive the care they deserve. It also reaffirmed its commitment to supporting health workers who are diligently serving across the country.
Authorities have therefore urged all medical practitioners on government payroll to regularise their status and adhere strictly to their professional and contractual obligations to avoid sanctions.
