Heavy overnight rainfall left large parts of Accra severely congested on Monday morning, with thousands of commuters stranded in traffic as flooding and waterlogged roads disrupted the capital’s transport network.

Several major roads experienced heavy gridlock after hours of persistent rain inundated sections of the city, slowing the movement of both private and commercial vehicles. Motorists reported spending several hours navigating roads that are usually completed in a fraction of the time.

Areas prone to flooding witnessed significant water accumulation, making some roads difficult or impossible to use. The situation forced many drivers to seek alternative routes, further worsening congestion across the city.

Public transport services were also affected, with passengers left waiting for extended periods as buses and minibuses struggled to reach their destinations. Some commuters opted to walk through flooded streets after vehicles became stuck in traffic.

The heavy rains also disrupted business activities, with many workers arriving late to their offices while others were unable to make the journey at all. Schools in some affected communities also experienced delays as students and teachers battled the difficult conditions.

The downpour has once again renewed concerns over Accra’s drainage system and the recurring flooding that follows heavy rainfall. Residents have called on authorities to accelerate efforts to improve drainage infrastructure and address the city’s perennial flooding challenges.

Authorities have advised motorists and pedestrians to exercise caution, avoid driving through flooded roads where possible, and monitor weather updates as more rainfall is expected during the rainy season.
