The Minority in Parliament has called on the government and relevant authorities to take urgent steps to protect the assets and properties of the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC), warning against any actions that could undermine the state broadcaster’s operations and long-term sustainability.
According to the Minority, GBC remains a critical national institution with a mandate to provide public service broadcasting and preserve Ghana’s cultural and historical heritage. As such, its properties and assets must be safeguarded from encroachment, unauthorized use, or disposal.
Addressing the issue, Minority members expressed concern over reports suggesting possible threats to some of the corporation’s lands and facilities. They argued that any attempt to alienate or misuse GBC properties could negatively affect the broadcaster’s ability to fulfill its constitutional and public service responsibilities.
The lawmakers stressed that GBC’s assets were acquired through public resources and should therefore be preserved in the national interest. They urged the government to ensure that all properties belonging to the corporation are properly documented, protected, and managed in accordance with the law.
The Minority further called on the Ministry of Information, the National Media Commission, and other relevant state institutions to collaborate in securing GBC’s assets and preventing encroachment on its lands.
They noted that protecting the corporation’s properties would not only strengthen public broadcasting but also enhance the institution’s capacity to generate revenue and improve service delivery.
The call comes amid ongoing discussions about the future of state-owned media organizations and the need to modernize public broadcasting infrastructure across the country.
The Minority reiterated its commitment to supporting efforts aimed at strengthening GBC and ensuring that the corporation continues to serve the Ghanaian public effectively. They urged all stakeholders to place national interest above partisan considerations in matters concerning the broadcaster’s assets and development.
