Majority Chief Whip Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor has defended the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) against accusations that it has failed to demonstrate commitment to the controversial Anti-LGBTQ+ Bill, insisting that the party has shown courage and consistency on the matter.
His comments come amid growing criticism from some sections of the public and political observers who claim the NDC has been hesitant in pushing for the passage and implementation of the legislation, formally known as the Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill.
Speaking on the issue, Dafeamekpor rejected suggestions that the NDC has been indifferent or unwilling to support the bill. According to him, members of the party have consistently backed efforts aimed at advancing the legislation through Parliament despite the legal and political challenges surrounding it.
“The NDC has been courageous on this matter,” he stated, arguing that the party’s actions in Parliament demonstrate its commitment to reflecting the values and concerns of many Ghanaians.
The Majority Chief Whip noted that the legislative process surrounding the bill has been complicated by legal challenges and constitutional questions, factors that have required Parliament and political actors to proceed cautiously. He stressed that these developments should not be mistaken for a lack of commitment.
Dafeamekpor further urged critics to acknowledge the role played by lawmakers from different political backgrounds who have supported discussions on the bill and contributed to efforts aimed at ensuring it receives the necessary parliamentary attention.
The Anti-LGBTQ+ Bill has remained one of the most debated pieces of legislation in Ghana in recent years. Supporters argue that it seeks to protect Ghanaian family values and cultural norms, while opponents maintain that some of its provisions could infringe on fundamental human rights and freedoms.
The bill’s future has attracted significant public interest, with religious groups, traditional leaders, civil society organizations, and international partners all weighing in on the debate.
As discussions continue, Dafeamekpor maintained that the NDC remains committed to engaging constructively on the issue and ensuring that Parliament fulfills its constitutional responsibilities in addressing the concerns of the Ghanaian people.
