The Government of Ghana has reaffirmed its commitment to advancing Africa’s digital economy during the launch of the Africa Internet Governance Forum (AIGF), stressing the need for stronger collaboration, innovation and inclusive digital transformation across the continent.
Speaking at the launch event, government officials underscored the importance of digital technology in driving economic growth, improving governance and expanding opportunities for young people and businesses in Africa. They noted that digitalisation remains a critical pillar of Ghana’s development agenda and a key tool for regional integration.
The event brought together policymakers, technology experts, civil society organisations, private sector players and development partners to discuss the future of internet governance and Africa’s growing digital landscape.
Addressing participants, government representatives said Ghana is committed to building a resilient and inclusive digital economy capable of creating jobs, improving service delivery and increasing access to information and innovation. They highlighted ongoing investments in digital infrastructure, cybersecurity, digital skills training and e-governance initiatives.
Officials also called for stronger cooperation among African countries to ensure safe, affordable and accessible internet services for citizens across the continent. According to them, Africa must position itself to fully benefit from emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence, fintech and digital trade.
The government further stressed that internet governance discussions should focus on protecting digital rights, promoting online safety and ensuring that no community is left behind in the digital transformation process.
Participants at the launch praised Ghana’s role in championing digital development initiatives and encouraging policy discussions aimed at shaping Africa’s technological future.
The Africa Internet Governance Forum serves as a platform for dialogue on internet policies, digital innovation and technology governance, while promoting collaboration among governments, businesses and civil society groups across Africa.
