Ghana’s Minister for Health made an unannounced visit to the Mother and Child Hospital as part of efforts to assess healthcare delivery, patient care, and the overall state of services at the facility.
The surprise inspection, which took place during the early hours of the day, saw the Minister interact directly with doctors, nurses, patients, and hospital administrators. The visit formed part of the government’s broader commitment to improving healthcare standards and ensuring that public health institutions provide quality and efficient services to Ghanaians.
During the tour of the hospital, the Minister inspected several departments, including the emergency unit, maternity ward, pediatric section, and outpatient department. The Health Minister also took time to observe staff attendance, the availability of medical supplies, and the conditions under which healthcare workers operate.
Speaking to management after the inspection, the Minister commended healthcare workers for their dedication despite challenges confronting the health sector. However, concerns were raised about issues such as overcrowding, delays in patient processing, equipment shortages, and infrastructure maintenance.
The Minister stressed the importance of professionalism, discipline, and compassion in healthcare delivery, noting that patients deserve timely and respectful treatment at all times. According to the Minister, surprise visits would continue across various hospitals nationwide to monitor performance and identify areas requiring urgent intervention.
Hospital administrators used the opportunity to brief the Minister on some of the major challenges affecting operations at the facility. These included inadequate beds, pressure on staff due to increasing patient numbers, and the need for additional medical equipment to improve service delivery.
Patients and relatives at the hospital expressed surprise at the Minister’s presence, with some using the opportunity to voice their concerns directly. Others praised the initiative, saying such visits could help authorities better understand the realities faced by both patients and healthcare workers.
The Ministry of Health has in recent months intensified monitoring and evaluation exercises in public health facilities as part of efforts to strengthen Ghana’s healthcare system and improve public confidence in health services.
The Mother and Child Hospital remains one of the key healthcare facilities providing specialized maternal and pediatric care, serving thousands of patients annually from across the country.
