A member of Ghana’s Parliament has reportedly been detained in the Netherlands, prompting swift intervention efforts from Parliament and Ghanaian diplomatic authorities. According to South Dayi MP, Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor, Parliament is actively coordinating both diplomatic and legal support to ensure the welfare and possible release of the affected lawmaker.
Speaking on the matter, Dafeamekpor revealed that Ghana’s parliamentary leadership, together with officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, has already begun engaging authorities in the Netherlands over the incident. He explained that the detained MP is not being left to face the situation alone, stressing that measures are underway to secure legal representation and consular assistance.
Although details surrounding the detention remain limited, the issue has sparked growing public interest and concern, particularly within political circles. Dafeamekpor assured Ghanaians that Parliament is treating the matter with urgency and seriousness, noting that protecting the rights and dignity of Ghanaian lawmakers abroad remains a priority.
He further indicated that the Speaker of Parliament and other senior officials are closely monitoring developments while maintaining communication with Ghana’s diplomatic mission in the Netherlands. According to him, every necessary legal and diplomatic channel is being explored to resolve the matter appropriately.
The development has also triggered discussions about diplomatic protection for public officials traveling outside the country, with some observers calling for greater institutional support mechanisms for Ghanaian representatives abroad.
While authorities continue to work behind the scenes, many are awaiting an official statement that could shed more light on the circumstances leading to the MP’s detention and the expected next steps in the case.
