The ongoing conflict in Bawku has become a clear example of how false information and inflammatory content can intensify violence and deepen tensions within communities, the British High Commissioner to Ghana has warned.

Speaking during a discussion on peacebuilding, misinformation, and national security, the British envoy expressed concern over the growing role of fake news, manipulated narratives, and unverified social media posts in escalating unrest in conflict-prone areas such as Bawku.

According to the diplomat, the rapid spread of misleading information online has made it increasingly difficult for authorities and peace mediators to control tensions once violence erupts.

The envoy noted that in many instances, false claims circulated on social media platforms have triggered fear, anger, and retaliatory attacks among residents, worsening an already fragile security situation in the area.

“The Bawku conflict demonstrates how dangerous misinformation can be when communities are already under tension,” the British representative reportedly stated. “False reports, provocative messages, and unverified claims can quickly inflame emotions and contribute to violence.”

The comments come amid renewed concerns over recurring clashes in Bawku, which have led to deaths, injuries, displacement of residents, and heavy security deployments over the years.

The British official urged the public, especially young people and social media users, to verify information before sharing it online. Media practitioners, community leaders, and influencers were also encouraged to promote responsible communication and avoid content that could incite hatred or panic.

The envoy further stressed the importance of digital literacy and public education in combating misinformation, adding that governments, civil society organisations, and technology platforms all have a role to play in preventing the spread of harmful content.

Security analysts and peace advocates have repeatedly warned that misinformation remains one of the biggest threats to peacebuilding efforts in conflict zones across the country.

Authorities have meanwhile continued to appeal for calm in Bawku while efforts to restore lasting peace in the area remain ongoing.
