The Meridian Port Services (MPS) has reported a significant rise in cargo volumes handled at the Tema Port, recording a 22 percent increase in the first quarter of 2026. This was disclosed by the Chief Executive Officer of MPS, who attributed the growth to improved operational efficiency, strategic investments, and growing trade activity in the sub-region.

According to the CEO, the port handled substantially higher container traffic between January and March 2026 compared to the same period in 2025. He noted that the increase reflects renewed business confidence and the effectiveness of ongoing efforts to position Tema Port as a leading maritime hub in West Africa.

The CEO explained that the expansion of port infrastructure, coupled with the adoption of advanced technology and streamlined processes, has played a critical role in boosting productivity. These measures have reduced vessel turnaround times and enhanced cargo handling capacity, making the port more attractive to shipping lines and logistics operators.

He further highlighted that collaboration with key stakeholders, including government agencies and private sector partners, has contributed to the improved performance. Enhanced security, efficient customs procedures, and better coordination among port users have also helped facilitate smoother operations.

The growth in cargo volumes is expected to have a positive impact on Ghana’s economy by increasing revenue generation, creating jobs, and strengthening the country’s position as a trade gateway to landlocked neighboring countries.

Looking ahead, the MPS CEO expressed optimism about sustaining the upward trend, indicating that the company will continue to invest in modern equipment and digital solutions to meet growing demand. He reaffirmed MPS’s commitment to delivering world-class port services and supporting Ghana’s broader economic development agenda.
