The Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has assured students, staff, and parents of Aburi Girls’ Senior High School that urgent steps are being taken to resolve the persistent water crisis affecting the institution.

The Minister’s assurance follows growing concerns over the school’s water shortage, which has disrupted academic work and daily routines on campus. Reports indicate that students have been compelled to ration water for essential activities such as bathing, cooking, and sanitation, raising fears about hygiene and overall well-being.

During a visit to the school, Mr. Iddrisu acknowledged the severity of the situation and described it as unacceptable. He stressed that access to clean and reliable water is critical to maintaining a conducive learning environment and safeguarding the health of students.

“We cannot allow our students to endure such conditions,” the Minister stated. “Immediate interventions are being put in place to restore stable water supply to the school.”

He revealed that the Ministry is collaborating with relevant agencies, including the Ghana Water Company Limited, to identify the root cause of the problem and implement both short-term and long-term solutions. These measures, he explained, will include emergency water supply arrangements as well as infrastructure upgrades to prevent future disruptions.

School authorities welcomed the Minister’s intervention, noting that the situation had become increasingly difficult to manage in recent weeks. They expressed optimism that the government’s response would bring much-needed relief to the campus.

Some students who spoke about the crisis described the challenges they have faced, including waking up at odd hours to access limited water and relying on external sources to meet their needs. They appealed for a permanent solution to ensure that such hardships do not recur.

The issue at Aburi Girls’ SHS has also sparked public debate about infrastructure deficits in some senior high schools across the country, particularly in the wake of increased enrollment under the Free SHS policy.

Mr. Iddrisu reiterated the government’s commitment to improving conditions in schools nationwide, adding that no student should have to struggle for basic necessities while pursuing their education.
