At least 23 people have been killed and dozens more injured after a series of suspected suicide attacks struck communities in north-east Nigeria, according to local authorities and emergency officials.

The explosions occurred in and around the city of Maiduguri, a region that has been at the centre of the country’s long-running battle against extremist insurgent groups. Witnesses said the blasts happened in crowded public areas where residents had gathered, causing panic as people fled the scenes while first responders rushed to assist the wounded. 🚑

Security officials believe the attacks were likely carried out by suicide bombers, though investigations are ongoing to determine the exact circumstances and whether the assaults were coordinated. Several of the injured were taken to nearby hospitals, where medical teams worked through the night to treat victims. Authorities warned that the death toll could rise as some victims remain in critical condition. ⚠️

The north-east of Nigeria has faced years of violence linked to militant groups, particularly Boko Haram and its splinter factions. While security operations in recent years have reduced the frequency of large-scale attacks in major cities, sporadic violence continues to threaten civilians across the region.

Nigeria’s president, Bola Tinubu, condemned the bombings and expressed condolences to the families of those killed. He also directed security agencies to intensify operations in affected areas and strengthen protection around public spaces to prevent further attacks. 🇳🇬

Local officials say security patrols have been increased across Maiduguri and nearby communities, while investigations are underway to identify those responsible. Community leaders have also urged residents to remain vigilant and cooperate with authorities as efforts continue to restore calm after the deadly incident.

The latest attacks have renewed concerns about security in Nigeria’s north-east, where many communities are still recovering from more than a decade of conflict that has displaced millions and left deep humanitarian challenges. 🕊️
