India is emerging as a potential game-changer in the global battle against obesity, as pharmaceutical companies in the country prepare to manufacture and distribute significantly cheaper versions of blockbuster weight-loss medicines that have taken the world by storm.

Drugs such as Wegovy and Ozempic — both developed by Novo Nordisk — have shown remarkable effectiveness in helping patients lose weight and manage obesity-related conditions. However, their high prices have limited access in many parts of the world, particularly in low- and middle-income countries.

Indian pharmaceutical manufacturers, long known for producing affordable generic medicines, are now positioning themselves to supply lower-cost alternatives once patents begin to loosen in some markets or through local regulatory pathways. Industry experts say this could dramatically expand access to treatment for millions of people struggling with obesity.

Rising demand for obesity treatment

Global demand for weight-loss medications has surged in recent years as obesity rates climb worldwide. Health authorities warn that obesity is a major driver of conditions such as diabetes, heart disease and certain cancers.

Yet in many countries, the newest generation of obesity drugs remains out of reach for most patients due to cost. Monthly treatment with some branded medications can run into hundreds or even thousands of dollars, placing them far beyond the budgets of public health systems and individuals in developing economies.

Indian drugmakers argue they can produce similar medicines at a fraction of the cost thanks to large-scale manufacturing, lower production expenses and a long history of supplying affordable generics globally.

Indian pharma moves in

Several companies in India are investing heavily in the production of GLP-1 receptor agonist medicines — the class of drugs that includes semaglutide, the active ingredient behind the most popular weight-loss injections. Analysts say these efforts could reshape the market once supply expands and pricing pressure increases.

India already plays a central role in the global pharmaceutical supply chain, providing a large share of generic drugs used worldwide. If Indian firms succeed in scaling production of weight-loss treatments, public health experts believe it could help narrow a widening gap between countries that can afford modern obesity care and those that cannot.

Potential impact on global health

Obesity has become a growing concern not only in wealthy countries but also across Asia, Africa and Latin America, where lifestyle changes and urbanisation have contributed to rising rates of overweight and obesity.

Lower-priced medicines could enable governments and health systems to integrate pharmacological treatment into broader obesity strategies, alongside lifestyle interventions such as diet, exercise and preventive care.

Experts caution, however, that affordability alone will not solve the problem. Health systems will still need clear guidelines, medical supervision and education to ensure the drugs are used safely and effectively.

Market competition likely to intensify

The prospect of cheaper alternatives from India is also expected to increase competition in the pharmaceutical industry. Major global drugmakers are racing to develop next-generation obesity treatments that promise even greater weight-loss results.

As new therapies enter the market and production expands across multiple countries, analysts predict prices may gradually decline — a shift that could make obesity treatment accessible to a far larger share of the global population.

For millions of people living with obesity, the growing role of India’s pharmaceutical sector may signal a turning point — one that could transform what has so far been an expensive medical breakthrough into a more widely available tool in the fight against one of the world’s fastest-growing health challenges.
