A Ghanaian-born footballer, Joel Kojo, is gaining widespread recognition in Central Asia after establishing himself as one of the standout players for the Kyrgyzstan national football team, a development that is also helping to strengthen sporting ties between Ghana and Kyrgyzstan.
Kojo’s remarkable rise came to light during recent bilateral engagements between officials from the two countries. During the visit, Kyrgyzstan’s leadership — including President Sadyr Japarov and Foreign Minister Jeenbek Kulubaev — reportedly described the striker as their favourite footballer and a national hero due to his outstanding performances for the national team.
Originally from Juapong in Ghana’s North Tongu area, Kojo moved abroad to pursue his football career and eventually switched nationality to represent Kyrgyzstan at the international level. Since then, he has become a key figure in the team, contributing significantly to its recent progress on the continental stage.
His impact has been remarkable. In 2025, Kojo was named Kyrgyzstan’s Best Player and has since emerged as the country’s all-time leading scorer. His performances also played a crucial role in helping the national team qualify for the Asian Cup, earning him widespread admiration among fans and officials in the country.
The Ghanaian connection in Kyrgyz football does not end with Kojo. Another player from Ghana, Emmanuel Yaghr, is also making strides in the local league, further highlighting the growing influence of Ghanaian footballers in the Central Asian nation.
During the diplomatic engagements, Ghana’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, met with Kojo and Yaghr in a special session facilitated by the Kyrgyz Football Association. As a gesture of goodwill and appreciation, the minister was presented with a customised national team jersey while commending the players for projecting Ghana positively abroad.
The meeting also opened discussions on future collaboration between Ghana and Kyrgyzstan in football development. Both countries indicated interest in strengthening partnerships that could promote talent exchange, technical cooperation, and broader sporting relations.
Kojo’s story is increasingly seen as a symbol of how sport can bridge cultures and strengthen diplomatic ties. His journey from Ghana to becoming a star striker and national hero in Kyrgyzstan reflects not only personal determination but also the global reach and influence of Ghanaian football talent.
