Former President John Dramani Mahama has urged tenants across the country to report landlords who demand illegal rent advances, stressing the need to uphold Ghana’s rent laws and protect vulnerable renters.
According to him, it is unlawful for landlords to request more than the legally permitted rent advance, yet the practice remains widespread, placing undue financial pressure on tenants. He emphasized that such actions not only violate the law but also worsen the housing challenges faced by many Ghanaians.
Mahama called on tenants to speak up and report offending landlords to the appropriate authorities, including the Rent Control Department, to ensure enforcement of the law. He noted that stricter compliance would help create fairness in the rental market and prevent exploitation.
He further encouraged government agencies to intensify public education and enforcement efforts to curb the practice, adding that protecting tenants’ rights is essential to improving living conditions and restoring confidence in the housing sector.
