Callistus Mahama, Secretary to the President, has disclosed that the Government of Ghana is taking steps to acquire a new presidential aircraft, with delivery expected by November this year.
According to him, the move forms part of efforts by the government to ensure safe, efficient, and cost-effective travel for the President and other high-level state officials on official assignments.
Speaking in an interview, Mr. Mahama explained that the current presidential aircraft, a Dassault Falcon 900EX, has served the country for several years but now requires increasing maintenance, which often disrupts official travel plans and raises operational costs.
He noted that acquiring a new aircraft would help reduce the financial burden associated with frequent repairs and chartering of private jets whenever the presidential jet is unavailable.
Mr. Mahama indicated that the government has begun processes toward the acquisition, stressing that the decision was taken after careful assessment of the operational needs of the presidency and recommendations from aviation experts.
He also emphasised that the procurement process would follow all necessary legal and procurement procedures to ensure transparency and value for money.
According to him, the new aircraft will be dedicated to the Presidency but will also be available for other national assignments, including emergency evacuations and critical government missions when necessary.
The Secretary to the President added that the planned acquisition reflects government’s commitment to improving state logistics while ensuring the safety of the President during both domestic and international travels.
The issue of a presidential aircraft has often sparked public debate in Ghana, particularly regarding the cost of maintaining the existing jet and the expenses incurred when alternative chartered flights are used for official trips.
However, Mr. Mahama insisted that the new aircraft will ultimately save the country money in the long run while ensuring reliable transportation for the nation’s leadership.
He expressed optimism that once the procurement process is completed, the aircraft will be delivered before the end of November to enhance the operations of the Presidency.
