The Vice President of Ghana, Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, has called for the swift completion of the ongoing expansion works on the Accra–Tema Motorway, stressing the project’s importance to the country’s economic growth and road safety.
Speaking during an inspection of the project, the Vice President noted that the Accra–Tema Motorway remains one of the busiest and most strategic highways in Ghana, serving thousands of commuters daily and facilitating the movement of goods between the capital, Accra, and the industrial city of Tema.
According to her, the timely completion of the expansion project will help ease traffic congestion, reduce travel time, and improve safety for motorists who rely heavily on the road for business and daily activities.
She emphasised that delays in the project could affect productivity and place unnecessary stress on road users, adding that government expects contractors working on the motorway to intensify efforts and adhere strictly to the project timeline.
“The Accra–Tema Motorway is a critical national infrastructure. It connects key economic zones and supports trade and industrial activity. It is therefore important that the expansion works are completed as quickly as possible to bring relief to commuters and businesses,” she said.
The Vice President also assured that government remains committed to improving the country’s road network to support economic development and regional integration.
Officials from the Ministry of Roads and Highways who accompanied the Vice President during the inspection provided updates on the progress of work. They explained that the project involves expanding sections of the motorway, upgrading interchanges, and improving drainage systems to enhance durability and traffic flow.
They indicated that when completed, the expanded motorway will significantly improve mobility between Accra and Tema while also reducing the frequency of accidents on the stretch.
Motorists and transport operators who use the route regularly have long complained about heavy traffic congestion, especially during peak hours, and have welcomed government’s efforts to expand the highway.
The Accra–Tema Motorway expansion project forms part of broader government initiatives aimed at modernising Ghana’s transport infrastructure and supporting economic activity across the country.
